Consultation

Please contact us to make an appointment to discuss your surgery.

You will generally have two, or sometimes three appointments before surgery with the medical staff in the Clinic, and one appointment with the nurse.

The first appointment will be for one hour and will involve a discussion about your reasons for seeking the surgery, your medical history and the role of surgery in the management of severe obesity. The details of the operation will be discussed including all risks and uncertainties as well as the benefits. The costs of the procedure will also be discussed at this visit. There will be ample opportunity for you to ask questions. If, following this visit you feel you would like to proceed, a detailed set of blood tests will be organised to gather additional information about your state of health, and an appointment will be made for you to be seen on another occasion.

At this second visit a further discussion about your situation and the risks of surgery will take place. Any additional questions you may have thought of following the first consultation can be addressed at this time. The timing of surgery will be discussed and if you would like to proceed a date can be set at this time.

You will also have an appointment to meet with our practice nurse/nutritionist for an hour to discuss diet and eating habits, both before and after the surgery. You will discuss some of the details of your planned hospitalisation and recovery time.

We recommend you continue to see us at four-monthly intervals after surgery for the first year and at six monthly intervals for the second year. A set of blood tests will be carried out prior to each appointment and annual blood testing will follow for the rest of your life. You are free to make an appointment to be seen in the clinic at any time if problems or concerns arise. You will not be charged for these routine follow-up visits and checks within the first two years, as this is part of your initial fixed-price agreement.  After the two year mark you will be discharged back to your general practitioner.
