Costs

The cost of gastric bypass surgery at Wakefield is $30,000 - $38,000.
This covers:

- All hospital costs
- Surgeon and anaesthetist fees
- Additional tests required while in hospital
- A contingency fee to cover the cost of any complications arising from the surgery
- All routine follow-up visits


Currently, Southern Cross Medical Care Society is the only New Zealand health insurer who will assist with the cost of a gastric bypass operation. They may contribute up to $7,500 depending on your policy and providing you have held the policy for at least 3 years.

The fixed price agreement of $30,000 - $38,000 does not include the two pre-operative consultations which cost $250 each.

**Wellington/Hutt region patients please note: The pre-operative blood tests required for surgery will cost approximately $250.00. This cost is charged by the laboratory because Capital and Coast and Hutt Valley DHBs are no longer meeting the costs of blood tests for private patients seeing specialists in the Wellington region.
